Tumaini University. — Report and pictures were received Mon July 26.

Monday July 26th, at Tumaini University: 1st Day of Classes

First day of classes is well underway!   Class is always interesting, especially showing students who have never touched a computer how to boot them up, log on, use a mouse, etc. Most of the students are showing up today rather than yesterday due to some communication problems. That has made the start of camp a bit challenging as new students are walking into the class room while it is already underway.

We ate dinner and did devotions with the students last night. We had a great discussion, in good part because we had both Pastors Mtembo and Lubowa there to translate for us. The English language skills vary enormously among the campers. Some of them are quite fluent, while others are barely able to speak the language. Needless to say, our Swahili is pretty bad, much worse than even their worst English!

The campus is quite beautiful, with the mountains in the background and many types of flowers in bloom. Below is the room where our opening bible study and English class are held. However, not all the facilities are quite so 'luxurious'. The first women’s dorm was abandoned after two hours because of a severe cockroach infestation. Dozens were visible at all times, some a few inches in length. Even after switching dorms so quickly, Carrie managed to extract 13 'new friends' from her luggage. Yecchhh.

Peace be with you!
